Where to go in October

October is a great time to travel, with fewer crowds and warm temperatures making for perfect conditions in many regions around the world. If you can’t decide where to go, we’ve picked out some of the best places to visit in October with various options depending on how hot you like it.

Orlando, Florida

No list of October vacation destinations would be complete without including Orlando. Located in Central Florida and dubbed the ‘Theme Park Capital of the World’ the city offers year-round sunshine and a seemingly endless array of things to do.

October can be one of the best times to visit Orlando, especially if you’re looking for good weather and less hustle and bustle at the theme parks. It’s much less humid than in the tropical summer months, and if you travel during term time you’re likely to get great rates on vacation prices too.

Look out for Halloween-themed events at attractions like Disney World, Legoland, and Universal Studios. Or head away from the theme parks and check out Orlando’s innumerable golf courses, shopping malls, restaurants, and nightspots. There’s the downtown region with its iconic skyscrapers and parks, and there’s the International Drive area which is jam-packed with attractions like the Orlando Eye Ferris wheel.

If you’re happy to travel slightly further afield there are some fantastic options for day trips to places like the world-famous Kennedy Space Center and the Everglades National Park.

Cabo, Mexico

Located along Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas is one of the best places to visit in October for sun. The rainy season is over by late September, and peak season hasn’t quite hit, so you’ll get lots of hot sunshine and slightly cheaper prices on flights and accommodation – as long as you avoid the UK half-term.

Popular attractions in Cabo include white sandy beaches like Playa del Amor, a popular spot for snorkeling, and Medano Beach which is home to the world famous Mango Deck party spot. For sightseeing, check out the famous El Arco rock formation in Land’s End, or head away from the beach and you’ll find golf courses, shopping malls, restaurants and nightlife.

Rome, Italy

There’s no real off-season in Rome; it’s nicknamed the ‘Eternal City’ after all.

The weather is still warm in October and the summertime programme of open-air concerts, theater shows and other events carries through slightly beyond the typical summer months. Highlights to look out for are La Notte dei Musei which sees more than 90 museums opening their doors for free in October, as well as the renowned Rome Film Festival, which kicks off at the end of the month.

Temperatures in the city peak at around 73F (23c) in the early part of the month but it cools down from there on. That makes for perfect conditions if you’re planning on exploring Rome’s ancient ruins, or if you want to make the most of Rome’s shopping, dining, and nightlife scene.

Marco Island, Florida

Located in Southwest Florida, along the aptly nicknamed ‘Paradise Coast’, Marco Island’s enviable location means it stays warm pretty much all year round. The summer months see the most crowds and the highest amount of rainfall, but by October the rain has subsided and the families have fled.

With average daily temperatures in the mid-80s, it’s still warm enough for a beach-based vacation. Marco has around 6 miles of sandy beaches to choose from, plus miles of pretty waterways, great golf and a top-notch shopping and dining scene. The largest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands, Marco Island is close to the Everglades, and just a short boat ride to myriad castaway islands.

There are some major annual events happening in October, including the Marco Island Triathlon and the U.S. Women’s Mid Amateur Golf Championship. There are many events in nearby Naples, including an international film festival, a great seafood event, and a craft beer festival.

Although there’s a slight chance of hurricanes in October, it’s still a great time to visit the region. And if you avoid the UK half term in late October, you should find some great deals on flights and accommodation.
