The golf courses at Champions Gate
Both of the scenic, 18-hole golf courses at Champions Gate were designed by legendary golf star Greg Norman. They take advantage of Champions Gate’s beautiful natural setting, providing golfers with gorgeous views over mature woods and stunning wetland scenery.
The National Course
This parkland-style course winds through thickly wooded areas and former orange groves. Hop aboard your golf cart (there’s free GPS) and set out for a round of golf you’ll never forget. There are dozens of deep bunkers and water hazards here, and the greens are relatively small, making this a challenging but very rewarding course. Look out for hole 15 – it’s a par 3, but the wetlands between the tee and the hole are said to eat up more than 15,000 balls a year.
The International Course
Also known as the Orlando Links Golf Course, this is one for experienced golfers who aren’t afraid of a difficult round. In fact, it has the highest course rating in Florida, and has been named as one of the 10 most distinctive places to play by Golf Magazine. All 18 holes on the International Course have their own challenges, with dunes and long grasses posing a constant threat. Choose the right club, though, and you’ll find that the rewards are more than worth it.
The golf driving range
If you need to practice your swing, head to the driving range at Champions Gate. It’s open from sunrise daily (weather permitting) and gives you the chance to get the best from your clubs – you can hit from the ground or choose to tee off instead. Grab a pyramid of balls and do your best to avoid the bunkers.
Other practice facilities at Champions Gate include a putting green and a short-game area, where you can test out your irons and woods. There’s also a chipping area and a bunker just behind the clubhouse.
The clubhouse
For casual drinks and snacks, head to the clubhouse at Champions Gate Resort. Apart from acting as a place to socialise and refuel, the clubhouse offers golf carts and club rental.
